Operating a forklift is an essential requirement in many industries. It does have risks involved in operating it, which can lead to many injuries and accidents. Hence, it is a vehicle that requires proper handling. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) ensures safety in the workplace by permitting only competent forklift operators who are trained and hold a valid certification to use forklifts. There are over 400,000 certified forklift drivers in the country, of whom an estimated 11.4% are women.

With proper training in place, operators understand key aspects such as hazard awareness, safe machine handling, and safety protocols. With proper compliance with OSHA regulations, workplace accidents can be prevented. It ensures a safe environment for the employees involved. Certification and continuous training should also be prioritized by employers.

    The Importance of Forklift Certification

Industries like manufacturing, warehouses, industrial complexes, and construction use forklifts on their premises. Forklifts are powerful machines designed to lift and move heavy items. It should be noted that if a forklift operator is not properly trained, it can lead to accidents. OSHA’s most recent estimates indicate that between 35,000 and 62,000 injuries occur every year involving forklifts. These accidents and deaths can be prevented with an adequate training program and certification course.

What are the Requirements for Getting a Forklift Certification?

To apply for a forklift certification, the applicant must be at least 18 years old. Having a driver’s license is a requirement that employers may expect to be met in order to operate a forklift.[1] [2]  Hence, the minimum age is 18 years. OSHA requires forklift operators to be at least 18 years old. However, some non-industrial training programs may allow younger trainees.[3] [4]

The requirements of this training program must cover the following necessities:

    • The general principles involved in safe forklift working
    • Types of hazards that can occur in the workplace due to forklift operations.
    • The general safety requirements for PTIs (Powered Industrial Trucks)

    Benefits of Forklift Certification

Forklift certification ensures efficiency, workplace safety, and compliance with regulations. The certification equips the operator with the necessary skills to operate the forklift efficiently.  Both employers and employees should understand the benefits of the certification well.

    • Compliance with OSHA Regulations: A forklift certification ensures compliance with operating a forklift. It thus involves reducing the risk of legal consequences and penalties.
    • Reduction in Accidents: A forklift operator with proper training leads to a reduced amount of accidents in the workplace. It will ultimately lead to reduced injury levels and fatality rates.
    • Increased Efficiency: Forklift operators with certifications increase work efficiency, as they are well-trained to reduce downtime, operations, and property damage.
    • Safety Ensured: When employers invest their time and resources in obtaining this certification for their employees, they work towards creating a safe environment. It is a demonstration of the employer’s commitment to employee safety.

How Long Does a Forklift Certification Last?

An OSHA forklift certification is valid for three years. OSHA is a U.S. federal agency that falls under the Department of Labor. The mission of OSHA is to ensure safe and healthy work conditions for employees. This agency could review and update its requirements on a regular basis, such as yearly. Forklift Certification is valid for three years. Renewal allows the certified operator to stay up to date on any safety changes. Another advantage is that it allows them to refresh their knowledge when they renew their certification.

    Conclusion

Forklift certifications last for three years, as per OSHA rules. Forklift operators should renew their certification in a timely manner to stay compliant with OSHA regulations. Workplace safety is also ensured.  If the operator is observed not operating the forklift safely or is involved in an accident, they must take refresher training before the completion date of their current certification. Keeping up to date with a valid OSHA forklift certification is necessary for maintaining workplace safety.
